Won in great style by the Willie Mullins trained Hedgehunter who provided jockey, Ruby Walsh with his second winner of the race, after first winning the 2000 Grand National on Papillon. Hedgehunter was very well supported in both the Grand National antepost market as well as on the day and went off as the 7/1 favourite. His win produced one of the loudest ever cheers at Aintree with thousands of punters getting the better of the Bookmakers for a change.

In the event Hedgehunter won the race quite easily, finishing fourteen lengths clear of the second, Royal Auclair, trained by Paul Nicholls. Third was 66/1 outsider Simply Gifted, with fourth and fifth being It Takes time and second favourite, Forest Gunner.

Hedgehunter tried his luck in the next three Nationals and almost joined the Aintree legends when he came a game second in the 2006 Grand National behind Numbersixvalverde. He was 9th in 2007 and 13th in 2008.
