Mon Mome

Mon Mome

The 2009 Grand National saw the Venetia Williams trained, Mon Mome became the first 100/1 winner of the great race, since the now almost legendary Foinavon achieved the feat in 1967. Ridden superbly by Liam Treadwell, Mon Mome was always kept in contention throughout the race and he looked every bit a champion when he bolted clear up the final straight to win the race by 12 lengths. In winning Mon Mome proved that outsiders in the Grand National odds, can have as much chance as the favourites given a good ride by their jockey’s and being in form on the day.

The big question however was Mon Mome really a true 100/1 outsider? Looking over his form before the race, it will be noted that he won the Boylepoker.com Chase at Cheltenham in December 2008, where he had several top quality chasers in behind. They included the Paul Nicholls trained, Star de Mohaison, who was thought good enough to run in the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Character Building, a 2009 Cheltenham Festival winner, Comply Or Die, who won the 2008 Grand National and Possol also a winner at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival

That form in real terms should have given him a ‘squeak’ at the Grand National and not the opposite. Yes it was a surprise to see him win, but it certainly was no shock, particularly when it is learned that he has never fallen in a Chase race, although, he unseated his rider in the Scottish Grand National in 2006. Add to this the facts that Mon Mome was second in the 2006 Welsh National and also finished the Scottish Grand National in 2008 in a respectable 9th position.
