First Lieutenant Betting
First Lieutenant will have his second attempt at the Crabbie's Grand National on April 9, and having finished down the field in the 2015 renewal the Mouse Morris-trained veteran will be aiming to improve on that effort in the 2016 running of the Aintree marathon.

A former winner of the Neptune Novices' Hurdle at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival, First Lieutenant has been battling it out at the highest level for a number of seasons, but having failed to land a blow in last year's Grand National the Mouse Morris-trained 11-year-old is set for a second crack at the Aintree showpiece.
He started off his campaign with a fourth place finish in the Clonmel Oil Chase, whilst he built on that effort with a creditable third in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, before coming a superb second in the Grade 1 Lexus Chase at Leopardstown over the Christmas period.
His final start came in the Grade 1 Irish Gold Cup in early February at Leopardstown, but the veteran failed to figure prominently, and Morris will now hope that he can galvanise one of his stable stars, as he looks to enhance his already lofty reputation with a big-race success on Merseyside.

VERDICT: First Lieutenant showed when second in the Lexus Chase that he is a classy performer on his day, but having struggled in last year's Grand National, he will find it an uphill struggle again in the 2016 renewal and it's hard to fancy him playing a key part again on April 9.
