Black Apalachi

Black Apalachi

One of the favourites for the 2009 Grand National who fell at the 22nd fence when running well, will be back again at Aintree to try his luck again. Trained by Dessie Hughes, Black Apalachi is a real work horse, who can stay forever and who usually jumps well. Sadly the only two times he has ever fallen in 34 starts, has been in the Grand National so perhaps punters should note that fact before getting too excited about his prospects.

This horse was a very impressive winner of the 2008 Becher Chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree, which is one of several excellent Grand National Trials. Black Apalachi won that race by an incredible 74 lengths, proving in the process that he loves the course and in real terms the fences do not necessarily daunt him. The race in fact was won this season by another Dessie Hughes contender, Vic Venturi. The 10 year old, has run 23 times over the bigger obstacles, and has won four times with a further three top three places.

Black Apalachi2010 Form

He has been out only twice so far this season, in January he ran poorly to finish almost last in a modest hurdle race at Leopardstown in January. However, he obviously came on lots for that run and was a very game second, behind stablemate Vic Venturi in the Grade 2, Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on 20 February. His trainer said he will come on lots for that run and was very happy with his National weight of 11-6. He is currently a 16/1 chance in the Grand National odds.
