2007 Grand National Winner Silver Birch

2007 Grand National

Irish trainer, Gordon Elliott celebrated his first win in the race when his ten year old Silver Birch claimed the honours in the 2007 Grand National. To win he had to fight off a determined challenge from the well backed McKelvey, trained by Peter Bowen, but managed to hold on at the line.

Overall it was a great race which saw only twelve finishers, with the first three home well clear of the rest. Silver Birch who had warmed up for the race by finishing second in the Grand National trial race, the Cross Country Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival a month or so previously, certainly gave fair warning of his form and therefore he was a surprise 33/1 shot before the race. Mckelvey on the other hand had been well backed on the day and went off 12/1.

Third horse home was Slim Pickings, with 100/1 outsider, Philson Run, fourth and Liberthine in fifth.
