2006 Grand National Winner Numbersixvalverde

2006 Grand National

Once more the Grand National honours went across the Irish Sea as the Martin Brassil trained, Numbersixvalverde comfortably won the 2006 renewal from 2005 Grand National winner, Hedgehunter, who was bidding to become only the first horse since Red Rum to win the Grand National two years running. A combination of weight and stamina sadly consigned Hedgehunter to the runners up spot, finishing six lengths adrift of the winner.

For Numbersixvalverde jockey 'Slippers' Madden it was a first success in the race and a fully deserved one as he rode flawlessly throughout. Hedgehunter along with the 2004 Grand National second horse home, Clan Royal had gone off as short priced 5/1 joint favourites, but they had to be content with second and third respectively. Fourth was Nil Desperandum, with 66/1 outsider, Risk Accessor fifth.

Numbersixvalverde tried again in the 2007 Grand National but could only manage 6th place behind Silver Birch.
