2000 Grand National Winner Papillon

2000 Grand National

This race will go down in history as it produced the first ever Father/Son combination to have trained and ridden the winner of the Grand National. The winner was the nine year old Papillon, and the trainer, Ted Walsh and the jockey was the mercurial Ruby Walsh, who also went on to win the 2005 Grand National on Hedgehunter.

Papillon was well backed before the race and went off as the 10/1 second favourite and produced an almost flawless display of jumping. He was challenged up the long final straight by the Charlie Egerton trained Mely Moss and despite giving 11 lb away held on to win. Papillon tried again the following year in the 2001 Grand National, and managed a very creditable 4th behind Red Marauder.
